Diabetes care should include the feet.
Make daily foot checks part of your diabetes care.
Why feet need attention
Diabetes can be associated with changes in sensation, circulation, skin health and wound healing. A small injury or pressure area may therefore deserve more attention than it would in someone without these risks.
My feet feel fine. Why check them?
Diabetes can reduce sensation in your feet, so an injury may not hurt. Checking daily helps you notice changes that pain might not warn you about.
Your daily foot-care routine
- Look carefully: Check the tops, soles, heels and between your toes for cuts, blisters, redness or swelling. Use a mirror or ask someone to help.
- Wash gently: Use warm, not hot, water. Avoid soaking and dry carefully between your toes.
- Care for dry skin: Apply moisturiser to dry areas, but not between your toes.
- Check your shoes: Look inside for stones, rough seams or damaged lining before putting them on.
- Protect your feet: Wear well-fitting shoes and socks. Avoid walking barefoot, including indoors.
- Avoid self-treatment: Do not cut corns or calluses or use chemical corn-removal products. Ask a qualified professional for help.
Daily checks and professional care
Daily checks complement professional examinations. Ask your diabetes team how often your feet need assessment and report new changes promptly.
